Giving That Matters Week

Community

Last month we held our 13th Giving That Matters Week, a week of volunteer service. In a time of increased need, our employees continue to show their passion for giving back and supporting our local communities.

Supporting our hometown communities

Twenty-three office and manufacturing sites across our network developed local initiatives through our Backpacks That Matter Program. Employees identified and partnered with local non-profits like the Wilsonville Community Sharing in Pacific Foods’ hometown of Tualatin, Oregon, Second Harvest of Metrolina in our Campbell Snacks community of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Northwestern Ohio Community Action Commission near our plant in Napoleon, Ohio.  Each team worked to identify the organizations’ most pressing needs and developed programs to close those gaps.

The result was more than 7,500 backpacks—filled with shelf-stable food, hygiene items, educational materials and more—donated to partner organizations for distribution to their clients.  Beyond just filling the backpacks, employees also decorated them with messages and images to brighten the day of recipients.

One of our largest Backpacks That Matter events was held at our Meals & Beverages plant in Paris, Texas. They partnered with Crockett Kids Closet to deliver 3,000 backpacks of shelf stable food to children in their community.

Our Paris team also works with the kids of Crockett Kids Closet to help package food for distribution—teaching them the value of giving back.

“The children put in a lot of heart in the bags of food they help prepare, and they take away a sense of pride, ownership, and heartfelt joy when they can be a part of helping feed children just like them.”

– Kelli Ward, Executive Assistant, Paris, Texas Plant

Mentoring youth in Camden, New Jersey

Our leadership team began virtual career coaching and mentoring sessions with Camden youth from UrbanPromise, a youth development program, which will continue over the next several weeks.

“Being a product of coaching through a challenging upbringing, I know the value of having someone care enough to share something that will create an impact on your trajectory. Hosting this session reminded me, even if it doesn’t land immediately, the act of caring puts some momentum for change in motion.”

– Craig Slavtcheff, Executive Vice President and Chief R&D and Innovation Officer

Helping from home

We also partnered with WeHero to host the following virtual volunteer opportunities, which were attended by more than 350 employees across the company:

Disaster Relief

Employees put together 288 kits full of medical and hygiene supplies to support families impacted by current disasters in support of Americares.

Honey Harvest

We showed off our green thumbs by growing more than 100 plants that attract honeybees while learning about the importance of regenerative agriculture for Campbell and our partner, Heifer International. We also learned about the beehives we host at our tomato processing plant in Dixon, California.

“I’m building a pollinator garden at my own home, so this event was perfect to learn more so I can make an even larger impact!”

– Breanne Staley Ashe, Senior Paralegal

In addition to the plants we grew, WeHero and Heifer International are providing habitat to support 3,000 bees for each of our participating employees—which totals over 365,000 bees.

Virtual Education

We created educational videos with National Cares to support underserved youth with remote learning. Our team recorded “how to” style videos on a topic of their choice—including hobbies, magic tricks, science experiments, sports, and resume building. These videos will also be distributed to local schools and non-profit organizations in our hometown communities.

Art for Social Equality

We partnered with acclaimed artist, Brandon Hawkins, to learn about the movement of social justice through the creation of artwork in support of National Cares.

“Art enables difficult conversations.”
